ABSTRACT
Nowadays, some people are trying to prove that being a modern European
and a person practicing religion in the same time is not possible.
It is declared that religiosity and Europeanism are mutually exclusive. The
author of this study does not agree with such thesis and through this study
tries to prove that being a religious man and being a modern citizen of the
European Union is possible, and even more, those two ideas - European
integration and religiosity are complementary. The objective of this study
is to analyze the interaction between the idea of integration in the European
Union and religion. Due to the limited scope of this work and also the
author’s interest, the area of religion will be narrowed down to the Roman
Catholic religion. The aim is to show that Europe has Christian roots and
at the base of the European integration lie the same principles that are promoted
by the Catholic Church. In addition, the Catholic Church position
towards the European Union will be presented.
