ABSTRACT
Objectives:
The purpose of the paper is to indicate the scope and role of the most important environmental factors in contemporary socio-economic development.

Material and methods:
A critical analysis of the literature was used to achieve the goal, the conclusions were formulated based on the induction method.

Results:
The risk of a global crisis caused by the degradation of the natural environment is increasing. There are political solutions that make it possible to embark on a path of development that allows to reduce the risk of destruction of the environment, but their application is met with social resistance.

Conclusions:
Adapting societies to the requirements of nature requires a change in habits and is costly. As a result, the propensity to make an effort is low. At the same time, a new approach to the economy, taking into account socio-economic and environmental needs, can be a strong stimulus for development for countries that embark on this path at the right time. This also applies to Poland.
